Music and the Mind of the World
Archival project for the estate of Tony Conrad
The multidisciplinary artist Cory Arcangel reached out to my studio, Familiar, to create a website for browsing and experiencing a unique artwork by the musician Tony Conrad. Music and the Mind of the World consists of more than 200 hours of recordings over 6 years of Conrad practicing and playing on piano.
Wall of Sound
The site has a straightforward interface that reveals information and revels in repetition, inspired by landmark pieces of minimalist art. The site allows listeners to explore a full archive of more than 6 continuous years of never-before-published piano recordings, each cataloged and annotated.
The site has one core component, the tiles which represent each individual recording. Each tile includes the recording ID number, recording date, part number, and associated metadata. These tiles allow playback control (with visual feedback about state changes) and file downloads.
The site's typography and color scheme are inspired in part by classic Tony Conrad album covers.
